Avec leur entrée dans la période dite post-media ou post-conceptuelle, les artistes se soucient davantage de créer de nouvelles structures narratives pour communiquer leurs histoires, réelles ou imaginaires, comme leurs expériences, petites ou grandes. Le point de départ n’est plus la matière et la technique de la peinture ou de la sculpture traditionnelle, mais un concept, une idée ou une histoire qui sera ensuite matérialisée. Jusqu’à un certain point, on peut même dire que l’originalité du geste artistique est portée par l’originalité des constructions narratives qui peuvent impliquer des matériaux et des organisations spatiales très divers.
Conscient que le monde est fait d' histoires et qu’une biennale doit surtout témoigner de son temps, le commissaire, de la Biennale de Lyon 2013, Gunnar B. Kvaran, propose d’explorer les diverses formes de l’art narratif contemporain international en mettant l’accent sur les œuvres d' artistes qui, non contents de raconter ou de se raconter, s’intéressent à la mise en forme de leurs récits visuels et s’impliquent dans le développement de dispositifs narratifs particuliers comme, par exemple, les Américains Matthew Barney et Tavares Strachan, le Brésilien Paulo Nazareth, la Danoise-norvégienne Anne Lislegaard, le Chinois Yang Zhenzhong, ou encore le Français David Douard.

With the coming of the post-media or post-conceptual age, artists have become more concerned with creating new narrative structures for their stories, whether real or imaginary, and for their experiences, whether major or minor. The starting point is no longer the matter and technique of traditional painting or sculpture, but a concept, an idea or a story which is then given concrete form. Up to a certain point it can even be said that the originality of the artistic act hinges on the originality of narrative constructions marked by great diversity of materials and innovative forms of spatial organization.

Aware of the fact that our world is a world of stories and that a biennial should above all bear witness to its time, Gunnar B. Kvaran, curator of the Biennale de Lyon 2013, is proposing an exploration of contemporary international narrative art in its many forms. The accent is on the works of artists who, rather than settling for straightforward narrative or self-narrative, are committed to structuring their visual accounts and developing specific narrative systems – among others Matthew Barney (US), Tavares Strachan (US), Paulo Nazareth (BR), the Danish-Norwegian Anne Lislegaard (DK-NO), Yang Zhenzhong (CN), David Douard (FR)…

Gunnar B. Kvaran est né à Reykjavik en Islande en 1955. Il obtient un doctorat en histoire de l’art en 1986 à l’Université de Provence, Aixen- Provence. De 1983 à 1989, il dirige le Musée Asmundur Sveinson de sculpture à Reykjavik, de 1989 à 1997, le Musée d’art moderne de Reykjavik, et de 1997 à 2001, le Musée d’art de Bergen en Norvège. Depuis 2001, Gunnar B. Kvaran est directeur du Musée Astrup Fearnley à Oslo. Pendant les années 80, il est critique d’art au DAGBLAOIO Visir daily et assure le commissariat du pavillon islandais de la Biennale de Venise en 1984,1986, 1988 et 1990.

Expositions récentes dont il a été commissaire et qu’il a organisées : « Au nom des artistes, sculpture contemporaine américaine » vue au pavillon de la Biennale de São Paulo en 2011, les expositions d’Ernesto Neto, Nate Lowman, Charles Ray, Richard Prince ainsi que la première rétrospective de Yoko Ono et la rétrospective de Jeff Koons. Quelques expositions collectives : Gunnar B. Kvaran a été co-commissaire de la 2e Biennale de Moscou, il organise « China Power station » (exposition dévolue à la création contemporain Chinoise à Londres et Oslo) et a été co-commissaire de l’exposition « Indian Highway » en 2009.

Gunnar B. Kvaran was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1955. He took out his PhD in history of art in 1986, from the University of Provence, in Aix-en-Provence. From 1983-86 he was director of the Asmundur Sveinsson sculpture museum in Reykjavik; from 1986-97, of the Museum of Modern Art in Reykjavik; and from 1997-2001 of the Museum of Art in Bergen, Norway. He was the curator of the Iceland Pavilion at the Venice Biennial from 1984 to 1990. Since 2001 he has been director of the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo.

Recent exhibitions Gunnar B. Kvaran has curated and organised include In the Name of the Artists: exhibition from the Astrup Fearnley Collection at the São Paulo Biennial in 2011; exhibitions by Ernesto Neto, Nate Lowman, Charles Ray and Richard Prince; Yoko Ono’s and Jeff Koons’ retrospectives… Gunnar B. Kvaran also co-curated the2nd Moscow Biennial; organized China Power Station, an exhibition of Chinese contemporary art held in London and Oslo; and co-curated the tour exhibition Indian Highway in 2009 (Lyon, Rome, London, Beijing, Copenhagen).
